Ditch Grass is a submerged, aquatic, rhizomatous,
perennial herb. Stems are thread-like, branched, round, 6-50 cm. Leaves
are alternate, thread-like, 3-20 cm long, attached at the base to a
membranous, sheathing stipule 5-20 mm long with or without a blade to 3
cm long. Flowers are borne in leaf-axils, in umbels of few to several
2-flowered spikes. Flower-cluster-stalks are up to 30 cm long and
coiled in fruit. Flowers are perfect, regular; perianth absent; stamens
2; pistils 4 to 6, ovaries superior. Fruit is ovoid, drupe-like, 2-3 mm
long, beaked, 1-seeded, borne on a flower-stalk. Ditch Grass is found
almost throughout the world.
